After being assigned to Brantford for over a month, BNSF 2090 and CN 4910 were finally turned on CN 581 in Hamilton last night. This morning was the first opportunity to get a nice morning photo of BNSF 2090 in front of the station. Exactly one year ago to the day, there was a mob of railfans in Brantford to photograph green-BN painted BNSF 2098 leading CN 580. This morning was a lot more subdued, only myself and one other railfan present to capture the action. Not a bad way to start the work day, again!

A pair of GTW GP38-2s assigned to CN 580 likely won't attract as much attention as BNSF 2098 did last year, but considering blue GT units have rarely been assigned to Brantford, GTW 5849 is a-ok in my books. My meeting downtown couldn't have ended at a better time. 580's crew was making their last switching move assembling their train for Cainsville before taking a break in the office to warm up. It was a frigid morning, and as you can see by the cloud bank looming to the west, the sun didn't last too much longer. It's a beautiful thing when it all comes together.

Steve's recent post of OSRX 1400 and Matthew Whiteley's subsequent comment that the unit last ran in the Summer of 2020 led me to look through my uploaded photos to see my shot of it. I came up empty. I don't know how you guys with over a thousand photos on here keep track of all of them. Anyway, here's the shot I was looking for, of Ontario Southland 1400 and 102 returning from Tillsonburg. They would do some work in Ingersoll before heading to St. Thomas with one tank car. I too encourage you to support the Via Historical Association (VHA) in their purchase and restoration of OSRX 1400 to VIA 6539 so I can relive my youth and see a blue/yellow VIA F-unit in action again! Can we also start a fund to acquire a MLW FPA-4 from someone? :)

Ontario Northland 1603 has returned to Uxbridge on the first York-Durham Heritage Railway "Pumpkin Patch & Halloween Train" ride of the day. 1603 appears to be the only unit serviceable on the York-Durham; we were told by a volunteer that the YDHR's RS11 and two RS3s "are fried" and will be scrapped in the Spring. The town owns the station and yard property and wants the area cleaned up. I was later told the locomotives won't be scrapped, so time will tell. There's a lot to look at in this photo: Uxbridge was hit by a tornado in May, 2022 which damaged the station. The station building is closed awaiting repair, so the railway's gift shop is currently in the white tent to the left of the 1603. The pylon in the centre of the photo marks the location where the cab window is aligned to stop the train in the correct location. Passengers are off to the right picking out their pumpkin in the pumpkin patch, except the Mom and little girl who was so upset her face was as pink as her coat. I don't miss the days when my boys were that young!

It's interesting, looking back through older photos, how quickly some can become nostalgic. This photo was taken in 2018, while wasting another lunch hour away at the station. An eastbound came into the viewfinder with two C-40-8 variants leading on a beautiful Fall day. Fast-forward to 2023, you'd be lucky to see a C40-8.

CN L540's first work of the day was to take four empty gondolas down the Huron Park Spur to Triple M Metal on Balzer Rd. I followed in pursuit, but the sun angle was horrendous for BNSF 2090 leading back north so I decided to return to Kitchener Yard and wait for them to come back. They threw a wrench in to that plan when they stayed on the south track to go out to the P&H Shantz Station Terminal to reposition cars. By the time I got out to Shantz Station Rd. they were already done with the repositioning and were ready to head back to Kitchener. CN 7068 and BNSF 2090 are shown crossing over Shantz Station Rd. heading westbound back to Kitchener Yard.

It's hard to believe that BNSF 2098 has been assigned to Brantford for almost three months. Expecting it wouldn't be around long, on it's second day in Brantford I chased it to Hagersville and back on a rather soggy day. Clearly, I didn't have to. Originally paired with CN 9547, CN 4713 came and went, now it's working with CN 4791. By now, I'm sure nearly every railfan in Southern Ontario has gotten a photograph of it. Railfans from several States have also made the trek to Brantford to photograph the cascade green BNSF. My first photo of BNSF 2098 was on June 8 pulling out of yard trailing on CN 581, so I thought it was fitting to upload a considerably better photo of it doing exactly the same thing in much nicer conditions.

VIA / SIXX test train with new Siemens equipment slows for a brief station stop in Brantford, passing the most photographed locomotive in southern Ontario. BNSF 2098 has been assigned to Brantford for over a month, and has attracted a lot of attention from the local railfan population. CN 4713 is now paired with BNSF 2098, replacing CN 9547.

CN 580 slowly makes its way back to Brantford after doing the turn to Hagersville. BNSF 2098 didn't attract as much attention as expected today; the crummy weather likely played a factor. The Hagersville Sub. is currently all 10 MPH, so it's not difficult to get multiple photographs of the train. I'm sure the small group of foamers chasing the train provided entertainment for the crew on an otherwise mundane day.

BNSF 2098 replaced CN 4138 assigned to Brantford this afternoon, but unfortunately faced west, the same direction as CN 9547. The first order of business for the CN 581 crew was to run light to Parkdale to wye one of the units. The pair are seen departing the yard and crossing over to the south track to head east. It'll be interesting to see how long BNSF 2098 sticks around. I suspect the Hagersville Subdivision is going to be a popular railfan destination while it's here.

GTW 5849 leads the 07:00 job "down the hole", crossing Simcoe Street East on the N&NW Spur on their way to spend the morning switching north end Hamilton industries. In true Hamilton fashion, I spent a good length of time kicking garbage out of the shot, only to have a homeless dude show up and park his shopping cart right in the way. Thankfully, he allowed me to relocate his worldly possessions so I could get the photo and not interrupt his scavenging.

With a Saturday agenda that didn't include photographing Trillium Railway, we were surprised when we arrived at Feeder and found no locomotives parked. We had seen JLCX 3502 switching the east end of WH Yard, but expected to find TRRY 1859 and LDSX 8920 at Feeder. We opted for a wild goose chase north to St. Catharines hoping to come across something and luckily, upon arrival at Merriton, TRRY 1859 and train were just getting on to the CN. They had lifted two empty boxcars from WP Warehousing and six new NS coil cars from Steelcon (formerly Trenergy Inc.?), where the coil covers are fabricated and installed. We followed the train back south, where they would lift more completed steel coil cars from a siding in Welland. At WH Yard, where this photo was taken, they had to sort out hoppers from the south siding before calling it a day. The old MLW sounded great sorting the cars. It got me thinking: Is TRRY 1859 the last regularly-operated MLW in Ontario? TRRY 108 was parked at the former Martech site, and OSR still has some RS-23 and RS-18u, but they aren't regularly used.

Little did I know when I posted this photo <a href="http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50643"> http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=50643 </a> late last year that RLK 4001's days are numbered. Long story short, Genesee & Wyoming has made an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency to destroy 88 locomotives due to improper rebuilds and documentation. The locomotives must all be decommissioned and destroyed by December 31, 2025. Poor old RLK 4001 is on that list. The only other Canadian locomotive on the list is CBNS 1705. My most recent photo of RLK 4001 was taken September 1, 2021 at Nanticoke trailing GEXR 2303.

Some locomotive consists last for months on CN 580, while others do not. Naturally, this colourful duo only lasted two days! They worked around Brantford on this Wednesday, ran to Caledonia and Hagersville on Thursday, and I think that was it. They were quickly replaced by GTW 6425 (in CN paint) and CN 4798, which of course hung around in Brantford a lot longer. One day 1 of 2, CN 580 is shown in Cainsville with one tank car for Blastech to be relined, and six loads of lumber to be unloaded at Rembos.

RLK 4001 and GEXR 3821 lead a train southbound on the Exeter Sub. on a beautiful Fall day. Photographed at Roman Road between the dots on the map known as Vanastra and Brucefield. Now fifteen years later, both locomotives are still with us in Southern Ontario. RLK 4001, with the Rail America logo on the nose and Lakeland & Waterways logo on the hood painted over, is assigned to Southern Ontario Railway operating out of Garnet / Nanticoke. GEXR 3821 went off for rebuild and returned as GEXR 2073 in Genesee & Wyoming orange and black.

The crew using NSCX 11 takes a break while NCSX 12 switches two CP hoppers around in the distance. From this angle they look the same, however #12 has angled white stripes on the sides of the hoods, whereas #11 does not. No sign of the SW1001s today. Shortly after I took this photo, CN came in to lift new TCMX hoppers and NKLX coil cars, the highest car number being NKLX 400096 for those keeping track.

I was asked for a photo of one of the NKLX coil cars at National Steel Car. This photo is the best I can do. NSC 11 was busy switching on this Friday morning, and I managed to get a few decent photos of it. Lack of convenient parking near the plant is an issue, and I had left my car in a less than stellar location for this and my previously posted photo, so I didn't stick around too long. I recommend parking on Beach Road and walking down to Burlington Street if you plan on sticking around a while. But not too long, because the security guard may come out of his booth, arms flailing.

The Donut Stop on Parkdale Avenue was calling to me, so on my day off today I paid them a visit. Since I was in the north end anyway, I too was curious to see if one of the Korean SW1001s was working at National Steel Car. Kenilworth Avenue North parallels National Steel Car's property, but it's busy with trucks going in and out of Dofasco. The switchers may have still been parked where Steve caught them yesterday, but it was tough to see and today there was several rows of new rail cars parked in the way. NSC 11 was bombing around switching cars around their yard as it often does, so at least I was able to get a decent photo of it. And I got donuts, so I can't complain.

National Steel Car 50 tonner #11, acquired new by NSC in 9/1954, suns itself on a quiet weekend afternoon. The 68 year old GE will soon be replaced by SW1001's from Korean National Railroad, acquired via locomotive dealer National Railway Equipment. NSC is right in my own backyard and I can count on one hand how many photos I have of NSC GE's. I'm interested to see what their new switchers look like.
